The City of Kerrville General and Special Elections were held on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Councilmember Todd Bock was elected as Mayor of Kerrville. Councilmember T. Scott Gross was reelected as Councilmember Place 3. Councilmember Chuck Coleman was reelected as Councilmember Place 4.
Citizens also voted to amend the City Charter and the City’s Smoking Ordinance.
City CharterPropositions 1 through 34 on the City Charter passed.
A first reading of the ordinance to amend the City Charter will be held at the May 27, 2008, City Council meeting.
A second reading of the ordinance will be held at the June 10, 2008, City Council meeting. The Ordinance will go into effect on June 10, 2008.
Smoking OrdinanceProposition 36 on the Smoking Ordinance passed. A first reading of the ordinance to amend the City’s current Smoking Ordinance will be held at the May 27, 2008, City Council Meeting.
A second reading of the ordinance to amend the City’s current Smoking Ordinance will be held at the June 10, 2008, City Council Meeting.
The amendments to the Smoking Ordinance will then become effective 10 days after publication of the Ordinance. This will take place by the end of June.
• The amendments to the Smoking Ordinance will prohibit smoking in the following public areas:
1) smoking in City parks,
2) on downtown streets during large public gatherings
3) in bars, and private clubs
4) within 20 feet of any public entrance to buildings; and if allowed in restaurants, said restaurants must have the smoking area completely enclosed
City of Kerrville Applications for Vacant Councilmember Position The City of Kerrville General Election held on Saturday, May 10, 2008, resulted in the election of Todd A. Bock as the Mayor of Kerrville. Mr. Bock will resign his position as City Councilmember Place 1 to accept his new position, thereby creating a vacancy on the Kerrville City Council.
In accordance with Section 2.04 of the City Charter, vacancies on the City Council will be filled by the City Council for the remainder of an unexpired term. Persons interested in serving as City Councilmember Place 1 may request an application through the city clerk’s office, 800 Junction Highway, or by calling 792-8306.
The deadline to submit an application to the City Clerk will be noon on Thursday, May 22. The City Council will consider appointment of the Councilmember at their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.
The newly appointed Councilmember will be officially sworn in on June 3, 2008 at 6 p.m.
Official Canvass, May 20, 2008, 10 a.m. and Reception Honoring Outgoing Mayor Eugene C. SmithThe Kerrville City Council will meet to officially canvass and declare the results of the general and special elections on Tuesday, May 20, at 10:00 a.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 800 Junction Highway. The newly elected Mayor and Councilmembers will be sworn in at that time.
Prior to the canvass at 10:00 a.m., the city will host a reception honoring outgoing Mayor Eugene C. Smith at 9:00 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend both of these events on May 20.
